Split Lot

Use Split Lot when only part of a Lot needs to be managed separately.

For example, you might receive 100 jars under one Lot and put 20 on Hold for cleaning. Or, two Containers may belong to the same material Lot but one becomes contaminated and needs to be Rejected. You can also split a Lot that was already created by an earlier split.

Split Lot creates a new normal Lot for the separated inventory while preserving where it came from. It is a separation or reclassification of inventory you already have—not the creation or removal of physical inventory.

How to split a Lot

Open the source Lot and select Split Lot, or open Split Lot and select or scan the source inventory.

• For Lot-tracked inventory, enter the quantity to move into the new Lot. You can choose an active destination Location; if you do not choose one, the new inventory stays at the source inventory’s Location.
• For Lot + Container-tracked inventory, select one or more whole Containers. Their quantities and Locations remain the same; they are reassigned to the new Lot.
• Choose the new Lot’s status if it needs to differ from the source. It starts with the source Lot’s status by default.
• A reason or note is optional. Review the selection and create the new Lot.

Indietory gives the new Lot a new internal code in the LYYYYMMDD-XXX format. The source quantity is reduced and the same quantity is placed under the new Lot, so total physical inventory does not change. Changing the new Lot’s status does not change the source Lot’s status.

The Split Lot action is recorded in Audit Log, and the inventory transfer is preserved in applicable inventory history.

For Container-tracked inventory, Split Lot works with complete Containers. To divide one physical Container into multiple Containers while keeping it in the same Lot, use Split Container instead. If only part of a Container must move into another Lot, split the Container first, then use Split Lot as appropriate.

What information carries forward

The new Lot keeps the source Lot’s Item, Manufacturer Lot Code, Manufacturer, Supplier, manufactured and received dates, unit cost, Retest Date, Expiry Date, Final Use By Date, and existing Lot metadata. Indietory adds a new internal Lot Code and retains the link back to the source, so the material remains traceable to its original Lot.

The new Lot is evaluated against any dates it inherited. A due inherited date can therefore set a more restrictive initial status; see Automatic Lot Status Updates.

Parent Lot and Origin Lot

Indietory shows these links on a split Lot:

• Parent Lot is the Lot this Lot was directly split from.
• Origin Lot is the original Lot at the beginning of the split history.

For example:

L20260801-001 → L20260819-001 → L20260820-003

For L20260820-003, the Parent Lot is L20260819-001 and the Origin Lot is L20260801-001. This relationship is commonly called lot genealogy, but the practical idea is simply that you can see the direct source and the original source even after a Lot is split again.

After the split

Once the split is complete, both Lots are managed independently. If the original Lot has 80 ea and remains Available while the new Lot has 20 ea and is on Hold, the 80 Available units can continue through normal operations and the 20 Hold units remain unavailable until their status changes.

The new Lot is a normal Lot: it can take part in applicable workflows such as status changes, movement, reservations, labels, and another Split Lot. Its automatic date-based status behavior is also independent of the source Lot.

Split Lot does not combine or merge different Lots, create additional physical inventory, or remove physical inventory.
